Reining

Precision at Full Speed

Le Reining_1.jpg

A horse at a full gallop races toward the center of the arena, then, in the space of a heartbeat, plants its hind feet in the dirt and slides for several lengths in a cloud of dust. The crowd holds its breath. Moments earlier, that same horse was spinning so fast its legs blurred, changing leads in full stride, laying down perfect circles. This is reining: the discipline where the western horse shows everything it can do, at full speed and with absolute calm.

It has long been called the dressage of the West, and the comparison holds. Where classical dressage seeks lightness through slowness, reining seeks control through power. Nothing is left to chance: every maneuver is scored, every step counts, every hesitation costs points. And yet, when everything is right, the whole run looks effortless, as if the horse could sense on its own what its rider never even needed to ask.

This series explores the two faces of this family of disciplines.

Reining: A Discipline of Rigor

On one side is competition reining: set patterns, committed to memory, judged in half-point increments by the NRHA, the National Reining Horse Association, from a base score of seventy points. It is a world born of ranch work and vaquero heritage, and it has become one of the most spectacular events in western horse sports. The sliding stop, the spin, and the rollback are no mere flourishes: they are working moves, inherited from the cow horse and refined to the highest possible polish.

Freestyle: A Discipline of Freedom

On the other side is Freestyle Reining: the same maneuvers, set to music. Here, riders build their own routine, pick their own soundtrack, dress the part, and play to the crowd. Some go even further and ride bridleless, sometimes even bareback, guiding a horse at full speed with nothing more than a shift of their body. It is pure showmanship, but technique still rules: the crowd favorite doesn't always take home the win.

What You'll Find Here

From the origins of the discipline to its great legends, from the mechanics of a sliding stop to how to read a run from the stands, this series tells the story of reining for newcomers and seasoned riders alike. Whether you come for the history, the technique, the rulebook, or simply the thrill of the show, there's a way in for you.

All that's left is to ride through the gate.
