
L'Outlaw Country et le country-rock

Le retour aux fondamentaux et les emprunts au rock
Le mouvement outlaw (Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, David Allan Coe, Hank Williams Jr.) a réagi contre le Nashville Sound en ramenant des instruments bruts : guitares électriques avec plus de gain, batterie plus présente, et une attitude empruntée au rock'n'roll. Waylon Jennings jouait une Fender Telecaster avec un son plus saturé que la tradition country. Willie Nelson et sa guitare acoustique Martin N-20 à cordes nylon (surnommée "Trigger"), usée jusqu'à l'os, est devenue l'un des instruments les plus reconnaissables de toute l'histoire de la musique.
La batterie
Il faut noter que la batterie a longtemps été interdite au Grand Ole Opry — l'institution la considérait comme un instrument de jazz ou de rock, pas de country. Le 30 décembre 1944, Bob Wills et ses Texas Playboys ont défié cette règle lors de leur première apparition au Opry. On avait demandé à son batteur, Monte Mountjoy, de jouer derrière un rideau, hors de la vue du public. Wills a accepté le compromis, puis, juste avant le début du set, a ordonné de déplacer la batterie sur scène — le staff n'a pas eu le temps de réagir. Ce geste audacieux a fait date dans l'histoire de la country. Cependant, la batterie n'a été pleinement acceptée au Opry que bien plus tard : Buddy Harman est devenu le premier batteur régulier du Opry en 1959. Depuis, la batterie est évidemment standard, mais le jeu country reste souvent plus sobre qu'en rock, avec un accent sur le train beat (un shuffle au balai ou aux baguettes qui imite le rythme d'un train).
