Challenger Series 2026: Gabriel Henrique da Silva Wins the Finale, João Paulo Velasco Takes the Season Crown

Western News Special | November 7, 2026 | Rodeo · Events & Festivals

Two Brazilian riders ended the 2026 Challenger Series season with a title apiece. At South Point Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 4–5, Gabriel Henrique da Silva, 19, won the season-ending event. His compatriot João Paulo Velasco, 21, secured the overall season championship without competing in Las Vegas. The distinction matters: one rider won the two-day finale, while the other finished the year at the top of the series standings.
PBR, Professional Bull Riders, confirmed both results on November 5, 2026. Together, the titles offer a useful view of the Challenger Series, launched in 2022 to give bull riders another competitive route and opportunities to advance toward the organization's higher-level tours.
A Final Ride Changes the Outcome
Making his first competitive appearance in the United States, Gabriel Henrique da Silva opened on Wednesday, November 4, with an 87.30-point ride aboard Whiplash. He was one of only four riders to record a qualified ride in the opening round. His second attempt ended quickly: Donnie J bucked him off after 1.65 seconds.
On Thursday, November 5, da Silva still had a chance to change the standings. In the Championship Round, he rode Not Like Us for 87.15 points. His two successful rides added up to an aggregate score of 174.45, enough to win the Las Vegas event. According to PBR, he completed two of his three attempts during the finale.
That last ride reshaped the podium. Fellow Brazilian Wingson Henrique da Silva finished second with 171.70 points. Returning after a two-month injury layoff, he had scored 86.80 on Up The Ante and 84.90 on Big Bills. American rider Marcus Mast, from Middlebury, Indiana, took third on 171.25 points, having won the opening round with an 89.10-point ride on Running Red.
Two Brazilians therefore finished ahead of an American on the Las Vegas podium. Another Brazilian rider, Rogério Venâncio, placed fourth with 167 points. These numbers represent riders' combined scores in the event, not their cumulative points in the season-long standings.
João Paulo Velasco Owns the Season Title
While Gabriel Henrique da Silva claimed the finale, the annual championship went to a rider who was not there. João Paulo Velasco, from Paranaíta, Mato Grosso, did not compete at South Point Arena. But the points he had amassed across the season were enough to retain the lead and secure the championship with 1,295 points.
PBR's season summary credits Velasco with 47 qualified rides from 64 attempts, a 73.44% riding percentage. Gabriel Henrique da Silva finished second in the overall standings with 1,180 points, 115 points behind Velasco. Winning the final event did not erase that difference.
The terminology can be misleading when a season ends with a championship event. The event champion is determined by the competition held in Las Vegas. The Challenger Series season champion is the rider at the top of the overall standings when the season is complete. Both are official titles, but they reward different achievements.
A Route Toward the Premier Tour
The Challenger Series is not PBR's top individual championship. It provides a competitive platform for developing riders, established competitors and athletes associated with PBR teams. Strong performances can help riders progress toward the sport's premier events.
For Gabriel Henrique da Silva, that opportunity is already tangible. His Las Vegas victory earned him entry into the first four Unleash The Beast events of the 2027 season, the organization's premier individual tour. He qualified in his first U.S. appearance after a two-night contest ultimately decided by his successful final ride.
In Lagoa Formosa, Minas Gerais, the Brazilian town he comes from, local news outlets also identify the rider by his nickname, Tetel. Their reporting reflects the attention his Las Vegas win has attracted at home. For the precise division between the event and season titles, PBR's official announcement and results remain the reference.
Five Seasons, an International Field
Launched in 2022, the Challenger Series has now completed its fifth season, with Brazilian riders leading its two separate lists of champions for 2026. PBR's historical records keep those distinctions clear. Velasco follows Gustavo Luiz da Silva (2025) as the overall season champion, while Gabriel Henrique da Silva follows Lauro Nunes Vieira (2025) as winner of the season-ending event.
The final results also show that progress in bull riding can take different forms. Gabriel Henrique da Silva leaves Las Vegas with an event win and four chances to compete on the premier tour in 2027. João Paulo Velasco holds the title that reflects performance across the full 2026 season.
